 No. 39: Isaac Bonga, Germany

The Lakers used the 39th overall pick they acquired from the 76ers to select 18-year-old Isaac Bonga from Germany.

This pick is puzzling, as the Lakers traded a future second round pick and cash considerations for a player who probably won’t suit up for them for at least two years.

With only a handful of players under contract heading into the offseason, it was widely expected the Lakers would target a player who could join the rotation now. De’Anthony Melton, Chimezie Metu and Shake Milton all went after Bonga, and look like they can play right away.

Still, Bonga could end up being a solid draft-and-stash candidate, as he still has so much room to grow.

Time will tell whether the Bonga selection will pay off, but for now, because the Lakers need immediate help, it’s a risky pick.
