Clippers swap picks with the Hornets

Examining the trade between the Clippers and Hornets, it’s easy to question why it took place. After all, it would’ve just been easier for both teams to select their preferred prospect by waiting one spot and saving those two future second round picks.

Those picks may not materialize into the next Draymond Green, but it’s always great to have assets in the cupboard in just case.

Still, in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Los Angeles gets what could be the best point guard in the entire draft.

Standing 6’6″ with a 6’11” wingspan, SGA will be a terrific defender right out the gate, with great quickness that will allow him to stifle the elite guards out West, and his length will translate to easy steals, igniting the transition game.

Current starting point guard Patrick Beverley‘s contract expires after next season, paving the way for Shai to seize the reins of L.A.’s offense. Assuming the Clips put the ball in his hands, SGA will have the chance to learn from experience on the offensive end, forcing him to improve his playmaking and scoring abilities.

The NBA is about having length and versatility, and Gilgeous-Alexander gives the Clippers exactly that at arguably the most important position in the league.

His offense has room for improvement, but even if it never does, the defensive prowess that SGA brings will make him an impact player from the moment he steps on the court.
