Complete 2018 NBA Draft grades for all 30 teams
Minnesota Timberwolves
- No. 20: Josh Okogie, Georgia Tech
- No. 48: Keita Bates-Diop, Ohio State
It was a quietly great draft for the Minnesota Timberwolves, who snagged two stout, versatile defenders at No. 20 and No. 48.
First up was Josh Okogie, a 3-and-D archetype who will need to speed up his release and elevate his release point in order for his shot to translate to the next level. However, he’s a proven scorer at the collegiate level, he’s got a 7’0″ wingspan with enough bulk to guard multiple positions and he rebounds exceptionally well for a shooting guard.
As for Keita Bates-Diop, how a prospect with his length, defensive versatility and terrific NBA name fell to No. 48, the world may never know.
In any case, KBD’s main selling point is also his ability to defend multiple positions. He’ll need to get stronger and be tougher on the boards to log consistent minutes as a small-ball 4, but he should be a reliable spot-up shooter, makes smart cuts and has a massive 7’3″ wingspan.
These two long-armed defenders should help the Wolves’ pitiful defense for the long haul, and if they become reliable 3-point shooters, this team will be on the correct path again.
The biggest drawback of the night is Minnesota’s original pick at No. 19, Kevin Huerter, belonged to the Hawks thanks to the idiotic Adreian Payne deal….
