Complete 2018 NBA Draft grades for all 30 teams
Miami Heat
The Miami Heat had no pick in the 2018 NBA Draft thanks to the Goran Dragic trade in 2015. Dragic just completed an All-Star season for a team that lost in five games in the first round of the playoffs. The pick the Heat would’ve had (No. 16) was used on Zhaire Smith, traded from the Phoenix Suns to the Philadelphia 76ers for Mikal Bridges (No. 10).
Funnily enough, the Suns also sent the Sixers the other pick they received in the 2015 Dragic trade — Miami’s unprotected first-rounder in 2021 — in order to move up and get Bridges.
In any case, the Heat missed out on a foundational piece like Smith or the chance to trade for Bridges to have an underrated point guard on a middling playoff team. It’s kind of a wash, though with hindsight being 20-20, it’s obvious now Miami probably could’ve gone a different route. The Heat still get a passing grade on this one.
