No. 22: Chandler Hutchison, Boise State

A few weeks ago, there were reports about Boise State guard/forward Chandler Hutchison leaving the NBA Draft Combine due to receiving a promise from one of the NBA teams that he’d be taken late in the first round, and there was a chance that team could be the Bulls.

The Bulls don’t have a history of making such promises a month ahead of the draft. As it turned out, they followed through, taking Hutchison with their No. 22 pick. Early on in his collegiate career, Hutchison wasn’t a standout by any means, as he averaged 3.1 and 6.8 points per contest during his first two seasons.

The narrative would completely change for the better over his final two seasons.

Following a junior campaign that saw him put up 17.4 points per contest, Hutchison finished his senior campaign with averages of 20.0 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, becoming the first player in the history of the program to lead the Broncos in each of those categories. He shot a respectable 47.5 percent from the field overall and knocked down 35.9 percent of his attempts from 3-point range.

Along with leading the Mountain Western Conference in scoring and being a good rebounder and facilitator, Hutchison also played reasonably well from a defensive standpoint, as he averaged 1.5 steals per contest.

Due to lack of a quick first step, Hutchison may never fill the role of being a guy who can get you a bucket in crunch time and if you’re thinking he will be the next Giannis Antetokounmpo, you’re going to be a bit disappointed.

On the positive side, the Bulls came into this draft looking to add a wing player who can score, play defense and knock down the long ball, and they certainly accomplished that with this pick.
