Brooklyn Nets: 2018 NBA Draft grades
By Alec Liebsch
Overall
For a team desperate for talent, the Brooklyn Nets certainly made their mark on the 2018 NBA Draft. The average fan might not know what to expect from Musa and Kurucs, but their upsides are palpable.
At such late selections, it can be quite difficult to carve out quality players; somehow, some way, the Nets pulled it off. Dzanan Musa could come to Brooklyn as soon as next season, with his microwave scoring intact. Kurucs could take a year or two, but if he develops into a two-way wing, the wait will be more than worth it.
Overall, the Nets did all they could to maximize their dividends from this draft. The fact that Musa, a projected top-20 pick by several draft sites, fell to No. 29 is a borderline steal for Brooklyn. Kurucs didn’t warrant steal-level value at 40, but if he reaches his potential as the 3-and-D wing every team needs, he most certainly could outperform his draft stock.
In the worst of cases, neither of these players come over for the 2018-19 season. In that situation, the Nets just begrudgingly allocate those minutes to other backup wings on the roster, such as Joe Harris and Caris LeVert. What a tragedy.
Optionality is the name of the game, and the Brooklyn Nets have certainly maximized that theme with the 2018 NBA Draft.
