2018 NBA Draft: 5 potential busts
4. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (No. 13) — Los Angeles Clippers
When it was initially announced that the Hornets drafted Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, it was the perfect opportunity for the 19-year-old out of Kentucky. He would be the main offensive weapon on a team that was rumored to be trading star Kemba Walker and begin tanking.
Now on the Los Angeles Clippers, however, this selection isn’t as attractive as it once was.
Gilgeous-Alexander may struggle to find playing time, as he can’t spread the floor as well as other guards. Chris Stone of Sporting News breaks down his misleading shooting percentages:
"“Although he shot 40.4 percent on them, Gilgeous-Alexander attempted just 57 3-pointers as a freshman. That equates to 1.8 attempts per 40 minutes. His lack of frequency is concerning. Instead of projecting as a 40.0 percent 3-point shooter, available metrics suggest he’ll be closer to 35.0 percent.”"
Guards Austin Rivers and Lou Williams are reliable on offense and Avery Bradley is solid when healthy. If the former Kentucky Wildcat struggles to produce right away, it’ll be tough for him to carve out playing time. He could spend the season riding the bench behind these more proven veterans, similar to Jawun Evans.
It also doesn’t help matter that the Clippers took Boston College shooting guard Jerome Robinson with the No. 13 pick. Robinson has a much more polished offensive game and would be a better fit as well, adding size to the guard position.
