Overall outlook

Unlike most people in the NBA world, I don’t understand why teams are considering Deandre Ayton as a lock for the No. 1 pick. I’ve gone on record as saying I think Marvin Bagley III is the best player in this draft but it’s time for me to eat some crow.

Luka Doncic is the best player in this draft.

He has as high of a ceiling as any prospect in recent memory and also has an incredibly high floor. There’s just no way this guy ends up being a bust.

I think a lot of people are scared of the risks that drafting European players in the past have shown us (see Darko Milicic, for example), but Doncic different. He doesn’t have anywhere near the bust potential as any European player in recent memory.

“Wonder Boy” controls the game with his cerebral approach, can pass as good as anyone in the draft (and he’s right up there with the best passers in the NBA), has a natural feel for the court and makes everyone better around him.

While his defense is a major concern, his attention to detail and ability to stay locked in point to him having some potential for upside on that end of the floor. If nothing else, you know he’s always going to give you effort. Unlike a lot of players, that’s not what’s wrong with his defensive game. He works his tail off on the defensive end and plays fairly good helpside D, but it’s just his athleticism that often lets him down. Plus, it’s not like Ayton and Bagley III are incredible defenders.

So why not take Doncic No. 1?

Frankly, I don’t get it. I think every team that passes on him is going to look back at this draft and think that it was one of their biggest blunders as an organization. You know, the way teams that passed on Stephen Curry are doing now.

Luka Doncic has superstar potential and I can’t wait until he starts to show it at the next level. After all, he’s already been named the MVP of the second-best basketball league in the world.
