2. Bring in another star

The San Antonio Spurs managed to make the playoffs on the back of LaMarcus Aldridge. Add Kawhi Leonard back in to the mix for next season (we’ll get to how this happens despite his desire to leave in just a minute) and the Spurs are once again near the top of the Western Conference.

Imagine adding a third star to this mix, someone who can create his own shot and space the floor for all of his teammates. At the moment, the Spurs’ system is allowing players such as Danny Green and Patty Mills the freedom to shoot from deep, spacing the floor. However, although they are players you can’t leave open, they will not hurt you the way a star can on a regular basis.

If the Spurs add a star who has developed his game and can work with other stars, they become infinitely harder to defend and move themselves back into the contender category. The Spurs have expressed interest in bidding for the services of LeBron James.

He may not be a third option, but he has shown that he can be part of a successful Big 3. He won championships during his time with the Miami Heat playing alongside Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, and then another alongside Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love.

Whatever happens, if the Spurs manage to sign a high quality third option, they are going to have to rearrange their roster. They would have to move on from Danny Green and/or Patty Mills who have contracts which may prohibit the signing of a star.
