Andre Drummond’s hidden talent: Quick hands

When you have a 6’11”, 280-pound center who is abnormally light on his feet, you’re happy if his defensive strong points include shot-blocking prowess, shot-altering presence, and the ability to guard his position.

If he also possesses hands that are quick enough to strip the ball from slick dribbling guards such as Dwyane Wade and Kemba Walker, that’s a welcome bonus.

Drummond’s 1.46 steals per game last season tied for 20th in the NBA overall, and No. 1 among centers. In fact, Drummond was one of only four centers in the league who averaged at least 1.0 steals per game, topping a list that included Steven Adams (Oklahoma City Thunder), Nikola Jokic (Denver Nuggets) and Willie Cauley-Stein (Sacramento Kings).

Those quick hands do more than help Drummond collect steals, strips and deflections. They’re also useful when he’s rebounding (league-best 16.0 boards per game last season), catching lobs and entry passes, and guarding his position without getting in foul trouble.
