4. Find something of value on the minimum market

Putting together a contending team means leveraging every available financial asset toward winning a championship. For most teams that means their roster will be filled with expensive and talented players; often it also means expensive and less-talented players. To fill out the roster, teams must turn to signing players to minimum contracts and expect to need those players at some time in the season.

  • The Cleveland Cavaliers needed their players on minimum contracts this season. Jose Calderon was surprisingly effective at point guard, at times starting for a club that could not seem to solve the position in the wake of the Kyrie Irving trade. Another minimum signing at point guard, Derrick Rose, did not work out as well.

Jeff Green was the true value signing, playing rotation minutes all season and eventually becoming a starter. Versatile enough to play the 3 or 4, Green could defend the other team’s best wing and allow LeBron James his preferred roaming role on defense. Offensively Green has a number of big games, including one of his best of the season in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals to beat the Boston Celtics.

Green may be looking for more money this season, and the Cavaliers should entertain the option of bringing him back. Although he has frequently been overpaid in his career, Green found a role that suited him well in Cleveland.

Also important will be to find the next Jeff Green, another player willing to sign for the minimum who can be a reliable rotation player for next season’s Cavaliers. As cap space around the league continues to be tight, there may be opportunities to snag a player who wishes to chase a ring this year and get back onto the open market next season.
