Why LeBron James to the Boston Celtics makes too much sense
By Kane Pitman
Should the Celtics go all out in pursuit of LeBron?
The Boston Celtics are one of the most storied franchises in world sport. They were the dominating force in basketball over three decades, winning 16 of their 17 championships in a 29-year period between 1957 and 1986.
They did, of course, secure a 17th banner in 2008. After a 22-year championship draught, the Celtics were back on top of the basketball world. Many fans falsely bemoan the fact that LeBron started this “super-team” era that nurtured the possibility for the Warriors to supposedly ruin basketball. But many forget, either unwillingly or intentionally, that it was the Celtics who brought together three perennial All-Stars in Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett to secure the Larry O’Brian trophy a decade ago.
Ten years down the road, the Celtics find themselves on the precipice of glory again. They have a loaded roster from top to bottom with movable assets that allow trade possibilities to be discussed until the cows come home.
But this isn’t your normal situation. This is a special, unique opportunity. This is simply something they can not afford to pass up.
Via NBC Sports, the Bovada odds are not favoring a LeBron-Boston union:
"“The Lakers are given 7-4 odds of landing James this summer. The Philadelphia 76ers have 11-5 odds, followed by Houston (5-2), Cleveland (5-1) and San Antonio (8-1). “The Celtics, considered by some as one of the best fits for James at this point in his career, are behind the Spurs with 12-1 odds of winding up as a Celtic.”"
They may be outsiders, but if they are willing to place the right cards on the table, they will quickly become the frontrunner. They have the pieces to appease Cleveland, they just have to be willing to deal them.
Danny Ainge and the Celtics may be looking to the future in an attempt to play the long game, but their time is now.
