Detroit Pistons: 5 options for pick No. 42 in the 2018 NBA Draft
By Amaar Burton
2. Jevon Carter, PG — West Virginia
Many of the articles I’ve read detailing the draft needs for each NBA team identify point guard as Detroit’s biggest area of concern. However, the Pistons already have three point guards under contract for next season: starter Reggie Jackson and backups Ish Smith and Langston Galloway. That’s not a bad rotation, in my opinion.
However, if the draft pundits are correct and Detroit does target a point guard, Jevon Carter is one of the best on the board.
He was an All-American selection as a senior, Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, NABC Defensive Player of the Year (for the second time), and Lefty Driesell Award winner (for the second time, given to the nation’s top defender) while leading the Mountaineers to the Sweet 16.
Carter averaged 17.3 points, 6.6 assists and 3.0 steals per game this past season. If scouts were able to look past his size (6’1″) and that thing where seniors get downplayed in the draft, he’d probably be a first-rounder instead of a second round projection. He is basically this year’s Frank Mason III — an amazing college player who has no business being drafted as low as he’ll probably get drafted.
Carter is tough and talented, he’s a leader and he’s clutch. The fans of whichever NBA team gets him will like what he brings to the table.
