2. Tony Carr, PG/SG — Penn State

Carr had a great sophomore season at Penn State. The 20-year-old averaged 19.6 points, 5.0 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game on 43.3 percent shooting from 3-point range. His post game and smooth shooting were clear reasons for his offensive success.

Despite his impressive averages, Glen Willis of PeachTree Hoops points out many glaring weaknesses in Carr’s game. He isn’t an above-average passer and he struggles to score at the rim. Furthermore, he also lacks the athleticism and quickness to be an elite one-on-one defender.

Willis also writes:

"“His best value as a defender at the NBA level is likely to be his versatility. He’s probably going to be good enough to function in a switch-heavy scheme or to help a team that needs their players to be able to play up to a bigger position on the defensive end of the court.”"

It’s clear he won’t be able to supplant Mavericks point guard Dennis Smith Jr. as the long-term starter. However, he could learn to play alongside Smith Jr. off the ball, or become a serviceable backup.

Dallas didn’t have a player score above 20.0 points per game and only had two that passed for more than 3.0 assists per game. If developed correctly, Carr could become a nice contributor for the Mavericks.
