3. Draft a point guard or a wing

Assuming the Pacers keep their pick (and history shows they’re loath to trade away draft assets), the smart money says they’ll look toward one of several guard and wing options that figure to be available at that point.

Although an upgrade at point guard is the more pressing need, there are fewer options at that part of the draft who profile as long-term starters. Aaron Holiday carries some name cache, but he’s very small (he measured under six feet without shoes at the combine) and doesn’t quite have the athleticism to make up for it. One hot name to keep an eye on is 20-year-old French point guard Elie Okobo. The mystery factor (along with an intriguing skill-set) is shooting his name up draft boards in a hurry.

In the wing category, Kevin Huerter, Donte DiVincenzo, Troy Brown, Chandler Hutchinson and Khyri Thomas all figure to be taken around the early to mid 20s. Even if Bogdanovic is back next year, he’s 29 years old and is among the weaker starting 3s in the league. This is as good a chance as any for the Pacers to get an upgrade.
