Final grade

Johnson had a letdown season overall. While he developed in a few areas, particularly on defense, he still hasn’t put things together on offense.

Although this was Johnson’s best offensive year per box plus/minus, it was still a severe negative. The team was consistently better without him on the floor on that end. A player with his draft position and tools has to become better to last in the league.

Heading into next year, Johnson’s focus needs to be on the offensive end. With Dwane Casey on board as the new coach, he could help to maximize Johnson’s slashing talents as he did with DeMar DeRozan. Johnson is not anywhere near the same level of player, but they do have similar wrinkles to their game. Both are great slashers who also struggle with shooting the 3-ball.

Stanley Johnson is clearly in need of some changes after struggling so mightily in his third NBA season. Moving forward, he could take that next step, but this was not the year for him.
