3. Gary Trent, Jr.

Gary Trent Jr. is one of five Blue Devils that have put their name in the 2018 NBA Draft pool. The 6’6″ 204-pound wing averaged 14.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists in his lone season on campus.

Trent’s biggest asset is his outside shooting. He shot 40.2 percent from 3-point range in 2017-18, tops in the ACC. Trent has shown he can shoot 3-pointers in a variety of ways: spot-ups, off-screens, off-the-dribble, contested. At Duke, he and fellow draft prospect Grayson Allen were a dangerous duo on the perimeter, combining to shoot 38.5 percent from beyond the arc on 14 attempts per game.

However, Trent isn’t the most athletic player. He doesn’t have the best first step off the dribble and he doesn’t have any advanced moves when he is attacking the basket. Trent also struggles defensively, as his 102.7 defensive rating was worst among Duke’s rotation players.

You can never have enough shooters on an NBA roster, and Gary Trent Jr. is definitely one. Out of the gate, he’ll be able to step into a game and be a threat from distance. However, other parts of his game could use refinement, which may keep him from being a starter-level contributor right away.
