Lack of free agent signings

Despite having quality weather, no state income tax, and winning a championship earlier this decade, Dallas has struggled in free agency. Carlisle is one of the best in the business and Dirk Nowitzki is a Hall-of-Famer, so one would assume that players would want to play there.

Over the past few seasons, however, Dallas has struggled to acquire big-name talent . The Mavs failed to steal Chris Bosh from the Miami Heat in 2014, and were snubbed by DeAndre Jordan the year after.

The free agent class of 2018 has an abundance of high-caliber players available. With many teams being occupied with trying to woo LeBron James, Dallas could make some big moves.

If Dallas once again fails to attract any marquee free agents though, re-signing McDermott will be more crucial than ever. Having his offensive contributions off the bench will help as the owner Mark Cuban attempts to build a competitive team.
