Aron Baynes’ successful gamble will be the Boston Celtics’ loss
By Kane Pitman
After gambling on himself last summer, Aron Baynes now enters free agency. A staple in the Boston Celtics’ rotation this season, he appears likely to be squeezed out.
Aron Baynes is fresh off his most consistent season in the NBA after starting in 67 of his 81 regular season appearances for the Boston Celtics in 2017-18. It was a career year for Baynes, who had started in only 24 contests over his previous five seasons in the association.
It could not have possibly come at a better time for the 31-year-old Aussie, who declined his $6.5 million player option to sign with the Celtics for $4.3 million last summer. Baynes averaged just 4.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game for the Detroit Pistons, but backed himself to earn more time and money this offseason.
The gamble appears to have paid off as Baynes grew to became an integral part of the Celtics’ rotation. Undeniably loved by both his teammates and the Boston faithful, his future in green is no doubt in jeopardy.
Though he is now on the wrong side of 30, lets take a deeper look into how Baynes’ successful season came to fruition.
