Toronto Raptors: Top 10 NBA Draft picks in franchise history
3. Tracy McGrady (SF) — No. 9 pick in 1997 NBA Draft
Career stats (with the Raptors): 192 GP, 11.1 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 2.5 APG, 1.0 SPG, 1.4 BPG, 1.6 TOV, 44.8 FG%, 28.4 3P%, 71.2 FT%
When thinking back on Tracy McGrady’s Hall-of-Fame career, it’s amazing to realize he wasn’t all that great with the Raptors.
Not to blame him, but a majority of McGrady’s lack of development could be attributed to playing next to Vince Carter, as Vinsanity ran the team, prompting T-Mac to strike out on his own in 2000.
Even so, Mcgrady was one of the most exciting young players in his first few years in the league, with breath-taking athleticism overshadowed only by his high-flying teammate.
T-Mac’s minutes were never that high, averaging less than 25 a night over his three-year tenure in Toronto, but it was clear the Raptors had something special brewing. They just weren’t able to keep it together long enough to see the fruits of its labor.
It’s pretty hard to discuss McGrady’s tenure in Toronto without discussing his cousin as well. The two will be linked together for the rest of time as one of the biggest what-ifs in NBA history.
This shouldn’t take away, however, from Tracy’s abilities on the court, even early in his career. Had Vince Carter never been traded to the Raptors, there shouldn’t be a doubt in anyone’s mind that McGrady would’ve dominated in those red and purple jerseys for years.
