Toronto Raptors: Top 10 NBA Draft picks in franchise history
9. Marcus Camby (C) — No. 2 pick in 1996 NBA Draft
Career stats (with the Raptors): 126 GP, 13.5 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1.7 APG, 1.1 SPG, 2.9 BPG, 2.1 TOV, 44.8 FG%, 65.4 FT%
The second overall pick behind Allen Iverson in 1996, Marcus Camby only played two seasons in Toronto, and yet still found ways to dominate in such a short amount of time.
Standing at 6’11” with an impressive amount of bounce to his step, Camby was a force on the defensive end, swallowing up rebounds and swatting any shot in sight.
After averaging 2.1 blocks his rookie campaign en-route to a spot on the All-Rookie First Team, Camby would go on to lead the NBA in blocks the following season with 3.7 per game, showcasing his prowess early on as one of the league’s best interior defenders.
Camby and the Raptors failed to qualify for the playoffs during his tenure in Toronto, which clearly limits the impact he had on the team.
One could argue that the only reason the Raptors decided to trade Camby despite his success was to bring in a more win-now type player in Charles Oakley.
If Camby had stayed in Canada, there’s no doubt he could’ve become the franchise’s leader in a number of categories on both ends of the court.
