Final grade

On one hand, LaVine played in just 24 games; his overall shooting efficiency left a lot to be desired and there is definitely some concern about where he is at from a defensive standpoint. In viewing his season from the other side of the spectrum, though, LaVine didn’t show too many ill effects from the ACL injury, which is a huge plus.

Also, in spite of the 11-month layoff, he proved that the Bulls were right to be excited about his athleticism. Even more important, although his insertion into the lineup was not a seamless transition, LaVine did demonstrate that he can take over a game in crunch time – something that wasn’t a certainty before he returned to the court.

All in all, it is doubtful that LaVine played well enough to earn a max contract from the Bulls this summer. However, with an entire offseason that can be utilized to hone his game, compared with rehabbing, as was the case last year, there’s reason to believe that he can grow into a player that can get the job done at both ends of the floor.
