5. Brandon McCoy

  • Weight: 250 lbs
  • Age: 20
  • Position: C

Brandon McCoy played one season at UNLV before declaring for the NBA Draft. Before the start of the season, he was projected in a lot of mock drafts as a first round pick. McCoy was one of the most talented guys coming out of high school but he cannot space the floor, and in today’s NBA, teams want big men that can shoot.

In his one season at UNLV, McCoy averaged 16.9 points, 10.3 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 28.8 minutes per game while shooting 54.5 percent from the field and 72.5 percent from the free throw line.

The Nuggets could use a guy like McCoy to play backup minutes behind Mason Plumlee and Nikola Jokic at the center position. Denver does not have a big body guy like him on the roster. He is still a raw player, but the Nuggets could work with him in hopes he shows that first round potential people saw in him early in the season.

Instead of the Nuggets going into free agency and spending money on a center, they can draft one instead and sign McCoy to an inexpensive second-round rookie contract. McCoy is a seven foot, back-to-the-basket center who scores in the post and uses his big body to bang around down low for rebounds. ESPN has McCoy ranked as the 66th best prospect in the draft.
