After playing three seasons at Michigan, Moritz Wagner is declaring for the NBA Draft. Wagner is from Berlin, Germany, but came over to the states to play American basketball, and he established himself as a top college basketball player these last couple seasons. Wagner is big that can space the floor because of his ball-handling and shooting, and he’s perfect for today’s NBA game.
Last season at Michigan, Wagner averaged 14.6 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 52.8 percent from the field and 39.4 percent from the 3-point. Wagner had his best season in his junior year and was the go-to guy on a team that went to the national championship. ESPN ranks Wagner as the 35th-best prospect in the top 100.
The Kings do not have a frontcourt player who can space the floor like Wagner. He is an excellent shooter and has a chance to see playing time right away. Wagner can play both center and power forward for Kings. He is a guy who can play with Randolph, Cauley-Stein and even Labissiere. Those guys can handle the down low work on both ends of the floor and let Wagner play more to his strengths on the wing. The Kings need to get shooters around Fox and whoever they select with the No. 2 pick.
Wagner has room to grow on the defensive side and with his rebounding. Despite that, CBS had this to say about the German big man:
"“In an era where virtually every big man must possess the ability to knock down 3s to stay on the court in the NBA, Moritz Wagner’s talent makes him a hidden gem in the draft.”"
Wagner is a hard-working kid who wants to win and could be a guy who comes in and makes a name for himself right away with the Kings.
