Brandon McCoy falls to Lakers at No. 47

We all know the Lakers need more options at center. At least, that is if Lopez doesn’t re-sign. Seeing as free agency doesn’t start until July 1, though, I’m working under the assumption that center is still a concern.

Let’s be honest — going into 2018-19 with Ivica Zubac and Thomas Bryant is a recipe for disaster. Sure, Zubac has shown some promise, but I think he’s already nearing his ceiling as a solid backup. As for Bryant, the 2017 second round pick offers potential but has minimal NBA experience and may need more time before he’s ready to see significant minutes.

Admittedly, Brandon McCoy isn’t exactly a solve-all to this problem. In fact, he’s probably further behind in his development than Zubac or Bryant. While that may be the case, I believe his ceiling is higher than both — and his intriguing mix of size, athleticism and tenacity could put him on an accelerator track to unlocking his full potential.

Here’s a tidbit for you that may help you understand why getting McCoy at No. 47 would be outstanding for Los Angeles. McCoy may not have been a star during his one year in college like Ayton or Bamba. However, he’s got the natural talent, motor and constantly improving game needed to emerge as a starter in the not-too-distant future. Sounds like a steal in the middle of the second round, if you ask me.
