Los Angeles Lakers: 3 underrated NBA Draft options at No. 25
Chimezie Metu, PF/C — USC
I know Chimezie Metu didn’t live up to the hype in 2017-18, but seriously? There’s no way he’s the No. 49 overall prospect in the 2018 draft class, as NBADraft.net’s Aran Smith suggests.
Coming into the year, he was seen as one of the top frontcourt prospects in the nation. Unfortunately, he struggled at times and failed to assert himself as a truly dominant force for the Trojans. Despite that, there’s too much potential in the USC big man to ignore him until the latter parts of the second round.
Even though he disappointed last season, Metu still managed to average 15.7 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 0.8 steals per game. There were some bad outings, including an embarrassing effort against top prospect Deandre Ayton, but the overall impact he made during his junior campaign was well worth a first round pick.
You’ve seen the stats — but you’re still unsure about Metu. Well let me give you more reasons as to why the Lakers need to consider this kid at No. 25.
Metu is an outstanding athlete at 6’11”, 225 pounds, sporting a lean frame and the movement skills to defend out on the perimeter. Although his outside shooting is still a work in progress (30 percent made in 2017-18), he’s shown improvement and an ability to be a versatile offensive weapon. He may not be a true rim protector yet, but he’s also flashed potential on that end of the floor.

Metu is an experienced, agile big who can help the Lakers replace Julius Randle if he bails this offseason. He grew up a Lakers fan, recently worked out for the club and has a history of battling through adversity. I’m confident he’ll be a consideration for Los Angeles in the first round.
