5. Tony Carr, PG — Penn State

According to The Ringer, Tony Carr is currently projected to go 55th in the second round, but other sites have him going as high as 47th. Either way, he has a good chance of being available when it gets around to the Spurs.

Carr is 6′ 4″ with a wingspan of 6′ 8″ and weighs almost 200 pounds, making him pretty big for a point guard. What makes him an intriguing option for the Spurs is that he knows how to put up points. This sets him apart from Dejounte Murray, who is a defensive force but not a prolific scorer. The Spurs seem pretty committed to go with Murray as their starting point guard, but someone like Carr could bring some much-needed scoring off the bench.

Over two years at Penn State, Carr averaged 16.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game while starting all 70 of his games. A recent scouting report from NBADraft.net describes him as as an “excellent shot creator off the dribble” and a “serious threat to score in the mid-range area.”

The Spurs sorely need more players who can create their own shot, and Carr’s mid-range scoring will fit perfectly with Gregg Popovich’s system.

The thing to watch out for with Carr is that he is 20 years old and has some holes in his game. He will need to work on his 3-point shooting as well as his ability to finish under the rim. If selected, he will need to show consistency and hard work to carve out a role in Popovich’s rotation.
