Sacramento Kings: 5 biggest disappointments from 2017-18 NBA season
3. Besides Hill, no movement at the deadline
Leading up to the Feb. 8 trade deadline, it was reported that teams had inquired about the availability of several Kings players: Vince Carter, Garrett Temple and Kosta Koufos.
Despite the interest, Hill was the only member of the Kings to switch teams at the deadline, as the trio of Carter, Koufos and Temple stayed put.
There is definitely something to be said about a veteran presence within a roster filled with young players. Someone like Vince Carter no doubt served as a valuable mentor to guys like De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield, showing them what it takes to be great and teaching them how to extend their careers as he has.
However, to keep the 29-year-old Koufos and the 32-year-old Temple — who will make a combined $16.7 million in the final years of their deals next season — is ridiculous.
Neither looks to be a part of the teams future, while both could’ve gotten Sacramento some combination of young talent or draft picks.
Veteran leadership is an important part of building a winning culture, but when it comes at the expense of acquiring talent that better fits a franchise’s timeline, it doesn’t seem to make much sense.
