Brooklyn Nets: 5 options for pick No. 45 in 2018 NBA Draft
By Alec Liebsch
2. Isaac Bonga, SG/SF — Frankfurt (Germany)
- Height: 6’9″
- Weight: 203 lbs
- Age: 18
This late in the draft, most prospects can either be grouped into high-upside players or win-now, low-ceiling guys. Isaac Bonga certainly fills the former category, as his point-wing skills are tantalizing, but raw nonetheless.
Bonga has exceptional passing skills for a guy of his frame. Some of the dimes he throws off the dribble are exceptional, especially for his age. His playmaking, whether out of nothingness or out of a designed pick-and-roll, is exceptional for an 18-year-old.
With his great passing, however, comes some shades of youth and inexperience. He makes quite a few careless turnovers from risky passes, and his savviness hurts his Frankfurt team more than it helps them. Even with his exceptional passing vision, he takes far too many risks to translate to the NBA immediately.
And that, folks, is why the draft-and-stash exists. For guys as raw as Bonga, they can stay overseas for a few years to develop their games with more opportunity. Bonga has legitimate potential as an athletic point-wing, so long as he refines his decision-making.
On a team that uses multiple ball-handlers like the Nets, a playmaking wing like Bonga would fit right in. His passing vision for a player of his size is excellent, which gives him a vertical advantage over other playmakers. With some proper coaching and refinery, he could be a lite version of Nicolas Batum.
