If the team doesn’t like what it’s seen from D’Angelo Russell so far, then drafting a scoring guard like Elie Okobo could be the move. At his best, he has drawn comparisons to a very familiar face in Deron Williams.

The reason for this is his ability to hit shots not only contested, but also off the dribble. With an effective field goal percentage of 56.9, he also probes defenses efficiently. At his best, Okobo finishes at the rim with both hands effectively, and can also hit layups at tough angles. His bevy of step-backs, side steps, and hesi pull-up jimbos make him a threat from all three levels.

Also, he’s as useful on-ball as he is off. He’s a solid spot-up shooter, as evidenced by his 38.1 3-point percentage. In a ball-sharing offense, his off-ball shooting will be quite valuable. Even when that shot isn’t falling, Okobo is a smart cutter due to his upbringing as a 2-guard. He knows how to play a complementary role, and he does it well.

What makes Okobo’s fit great with the Nets, along with his scoring upside, is his pick-and-roll execution. His ability to score from all levels opens up a bounty of options, such as dumping off to the roller, kicking out to a shooter, or creating his own shot. In a system with a heavy dose of pick-and-roll like Brooklyn’s, Okobo could really do some damage.
