New York Knicks: 5 options for pick No. 37 in 2018 NBA Draft
2. Moritz Wagner, PF/C — Michigan
At this stage of the NBA pre-draft process, there is a lot of fluidity in regards to where some prospects stand. There is a good idea of which prospects will go in the lottery or have a chance to sneak into the lottery, but once you get to the back end of the first round, anything can happen. Moritz Wagner falls into that category.
Wagner burst onto the scene in 2017 during Michigan’s surprising postseason run. After a plane accident put their postseason play in jeopardy, the team rallied to have one of the best runs in recent history. Wagner was a driving force behind that play and carried it over into the 2017-18 season.
Wagner is very versatile offensively. He can score in a multitude of ways, as he can hurt you inside or outside. Wagner profiles as a stretch-big in the NBA, and he knocked down 39.4 percent of his 3-pointers the past two seasons.
On offense is where Wagner will have to make his mark, as he is lacking defensively. He isn’t the most gifted player athletically, which limits him on defense. He is foul-prone and struggles in space, something he will have to improve upon to stick in the NBA. Wagner averaged 7.1 rebounds this past season, but that is another area he will need to improve to carve out a role in the NBA.
His versatile offensive game will play well in the pros. His athleticism (or lack thereof) and less than stellar defense could scare some teams away. However, a team like the Knicks would be hard-pressed to pass on a potential first round talent if he is around when they are on the clock at No. 37.
