3. Bruce Brown, SG — Miami

  • Height: 6’5″
  • Weight: 195 lbs
  • Age: 21 (Sophomore)

The only guard in this quintet, Bruce Brown would be a welcome addition to any rotation. His grit and toughness on defense make him an immediate plug-and-play option.

It would help if his shot improves though, as he only converted 41.5 percent of his shots from the floor (26.7 percent from downtown). He scored 11.4 points per game on average, but they weren’t pretty.

Meanwhile, Brown’s size and defensive stats provide a high floor. He posted an above-average 5.1 defensive box plus-minus, while also contributing 0.075 defensive win shares per 40 minutes. At worst, he can be a defensive stalwart with some point guard capabilities.

Additionally, he compensates for his lack of shooting well. He makes timely cuts and transition slashes, which will make him useful on offense regardless. His effectiveness initiating the pick-and-roll can’t be forgotten either, which is always a welcome addition to this Nets roster.

He can create his own shot well, whether in isolation or in the pick-and-roll; his mechanics and decision-making just need some refinery. His strengths, most of which can’t be taught, will override his minute weaknesses. He will need to go to a team with developmental acumen though, which the Nets check off with aplomb.
