Final grade

It was another rough year for the Orlando Magic, and second round pick Wesley Iwundu had a fairly uneventful season along the way.

However, he did show that he has the tools to be an effective role player down the line. He has a long, athletic body and is a talented and willing defender. Iwundu is also effective when running in transition, and has the moves to attack the basket consistently.

Unfortunately, he really can’t shoot from anywhere else on the floor but at the rim. Wes isn’t the only wing in this league that struggles from distance, but if he wants to stay in the NBA he has to at least re-develop his jump shot well enough to be a threat outside of the key.

At this point, Iwundu has the tools to be a playmaking wing defender in the vein of Shaun Livingston, Andre Iguodala or Evan Turner. Sadly, Frank Vogel didn’t really seem to give him the opportunity to develop those skills. Iwundu had the worst usage rate of any regular on the team, leaving most of the ball-handling duties to point guard duo D.J. Augustin and Shelvin Mack.

Honestly, it felt like Vogel missed an opportunity keeping him in the corner on offense. Wesley Iwundu can bring more to an NBA team than what he was put in position to do. Hopefully the Magic’s next coach will understand this and help Iwundu maximize his potential.
