Detroit Pistons: 5 goals for the 2018 offseason
4. Improve their pace
Last season, the Detroit Pistons were 21st in pace. This led to an offensive rating that ranked 19th in the league. Given that the Pistons’ record of 39-43 was 19th in the league, it is easy to see why they need to improve their pace.
However, this lack of pace was compounded by a number of other issues. As a team, their effective field goal percentage was 51.2 percent, which was only good enough 20th in the league. This means that not only were they in the bottom-third of the league for how many times they had the ball over 48 minutes, they were also in the bottom-third for how they shot the ball.
Further compounding the issue is they got to the free throw line 16.9 percent of the time they attempted a field goal. This was 27th in the league. They also attempted only 33.3 percent of their shots from outside the 3-point arc.
If the Pistons were to improve their record they need to improve their pace. If they can do this they can cover some of their other issues with their offense. An easier way of doing this is improving their fast break points, where they ranked 18th last season.
