5. Find a new head coach

Unfortunately for the Detroit Pistons fanbase, the Stan Van Gundy era did not bring the success they were hoping for. In 328 games, Van Gundy had a 152-176 record, only making the playoffs once in four seasons. The Cleveland Cavaliers swept them in the first round that year.

The Pistons never got far enough under the tenure of Van Gundy. They were 29-53 in the 2013-14 season. Van Gundy took over the Pistons in 2014-15 and their record improved slightly to 32-50.

In 2015-16, the Pistons had their best record under Van Gundy, going 44-38 and making the playoffs. However, it was all downhill from there. In 2016-17, the Pistons slipped back, going 37-45 before going 39-43 this season.

With the exception of SVG’s second year as coach, the Pistons did not show enough improvement under his regime.

Van Gundy has had one of the most dominant centers in the game in Andre Drummond. This season he added one of the more versatile power forwards in Blake Griffin and yet he was still not able to make the playoffs. This offseason, finding a new head coach to harness that superstar frontcourt is a top priority.
