2. De’Anthony Melton, PG/SG — USC

A wildcard pick if there ever was one, De’Anthony Melton, formerly of USC, could be scooped up before the Lakers even select. Not bad for a player who missed the entire 2017-18 NCAA season.

Nathan Fenno of the Los Angeles Times reported that amidst a probe into a bribery scandal, Melton and USC decided it was best he not play his sophomore year.

Melton went to social media to thank his teammates and coaches and said he’d be using his time to prepare for the upcoming draft.

The defensive-minded combo guard showed flashes of brilliance during his freshman year, especially by filling up the box score. Melton averaged 8.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.9 steals and 1.0 blocks per game during his lone season in college.

With all the question marks surrounding Melton’s situation, his draft position is hard to predict. He could go as high as a late lottery pick or drop to the second round, it’s difficult to measure.

If Melton is available when the Lakers are on the clock, it will be hard for them to pass on the local kid who has potential written all over him.
