Dallas Mavericks: 5 goals for the 2018 offseason
The Dallas Mavericks had another poor season in 2017-18. Now it is time to take a look at five broad goals for the upcoming 2018 offseason.
Since the 2010-11 season when the Dallas Mavericks won their first NBA championship, it has been a slide into mediocrity. At the end of the 2012 season, the Mavericks slipped to seventh in the West. In 2013 they missed the playoffs, finishing 10th in the West.
The next three seasons they made the playoffs only to lose in the first round all three times. Last season they were reasonably competitive, winning 33 games, but then we come to this most recent season.
The Mavs were bad all year. To only win 24 games in an 82-game season is tough for the entire organization.
However, there are some silver linings for Dallas. Harrison Barnes showed that he is a very talented player, scoring 18.9 points per game this season. Dennis Smith Jr. is a promising, explosive rookie. Add a nice complementary piece like Wesley Matthews and the future is bright.
Most importantly, the Mavericks have the fifth pick in the upcoming 2018 NBA Draft, giving them a chance to add another franchise type player to this quality core. On top of this, the Mavericks have about $31.8 million in practical cap space, per Spotrac.
With that in mind, here are five broad offseason goals for the Dallas Mavericks.
