Strengths

At 6’6″ and possessing a 6’10 “wingspan, Richardson’s athleticism and physical tools have enabled him to become one of the elite perimeter defenders in the league.

Recently, Richardson commented on his approach to the defensive end of the floor:

"“I’ve always kind of been not a gambling defensive player, but very aggressive. And I kind of pride myself on being a step ahead of the offense at times. I think the coaching staff has done a good job of letting me make mistakes at times. More likely than not, I’ll make the right decision, though.”"

Overall, Richardson was one of only three players in the league to record at least 120 steals and 70 blocks, with the other two being the Philadelphia 76ers pair of Ben Simmons and Robert Covington. Additionally, Richardson led the Heat with 2.6 deflections per game, while also leading the team in contested 3-point shots with 3.1 per game.

Such was his impact this season that head coach Erik Spoelstra on numerous occasions advocated for Richardson’s selection on an All-NBA defensive team, such as the following:

"“….on that side of the floor, I think he’s All-NBA defense. He is, night in and night out. He’s become a very disciplined, dynamic defender, one that can really take on multiple positions.”"

In addition to his defensive exploits, Richardson also demonstrated his capabilities at the offensive end. On 10 occasions this season, Richardson posted 20 or more points, during which time the Heat recorded a 7-3 record. Furthermore, Richardson had 19 games in which he nailed three or more 3-pointers, with his 127 total triples ranking second on the Heat behind Wayne Ellington.
