Brooklyn Nets: 2017-18 player grades for Joe Harris
By Alec Liebsch
Final grade
In summary, Joe Harris’ 2017-18 season was quite a successful one by his standards. He improved in virtually everything, and provided instant offense for a bench that barely had instances of anything. He was rock-solid and consistent from game to game, which says a lot on a team more vacillating than a sine graph.
Harris’s ability to step into a game and immediately pressure the defense is vital to Atkinson’s system. Shooters are gold in the NBA, and general manager Sean Marks struck with Harris.
Harris is probably not going to be a regular starter in the NBA, but the Nets should be happy to have him. It’s not every day that a young, rotation-caliber player can be purloined for the veteran’s minimum.
It must also be noted that Harris is an unrestricted free agent this summer. While many players would love to financially capitalize on such an opportunity, it appears Harris won’t have much leverage to do so. Not many teams in the NBA have ample cap space, and they probably won’t be breaking the bank for a rotational sniper.
That only helps the Nets with retaining him. He has outwardly stated his desire to remain a Net, and who can blame him? Coach Atkinson and the gang unearthed Harris’s most valuable skills, and put him in the best situation to succeed.
For all his efforts, I give Harris a B+ for the year. He improved across the board, turning from a bench scrub to a legitimate 15-plus minute per game player.
