Orlando Magic: 5 options for pick No. 6 in 2018 NBA Draft
2. Collin Sexton
The Orlando Magic’s main objective in this draft needs to be finding a suitable playmaker to run an offense and create something off the dribble. Collin Sexton, guard from the University of Alabama, has some flaws, but his relentless energy and continuous drive to attack offensively could be a strong pick for the Magic.
Sexton averaged 19.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game in his lone season in Tuscaloosa, shooting 44.7 percent from the field and 33.6 percent from the 3-point line. His shot selection was questionable in college, but that could be a product of the lack of a system and serviceable offensive talent around him. He has a smooth jumper, and he could be a terror attacking the basket with NBA spacing given his handle and ability to finish in the paint.
He projects to be a great guard defender in the NBA, and can make an impact on or off the ball. Sexton isn’t as versatile as other guards when taking his 6’2” height into context, but him getting beat by larger wings won’t be for a lack of effort.
Sexton is a player whose energy and effort would translate and trickle down throughout a roster. Combine this with his projected improvement playing with shooters around him, and the Magic could have their guard of the future. Gordon and Isaac would surely benefit from a player like Sexton setting them up. I expect Sexton to rise up big boards as draft workouts commence.
