5. Wendell Carter Jr.

With Jonathan Isaac and Aaron Gordon on the roster, drafting an athletic big like Mohamed Bamba or Marvin Bagley III shouldn’t interest the Magic. Wendell Carter Jr., however, is a solid athlete, but is also a big with great feel for the game and the ability to score from the post or the perimeter.

Carter averaged 13.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and 2.0 assists per game in his lone season playing for a talented Duke Blue Devils team. He knocked down 56.1 percent of his field goals, including 41.3 percent from the 3-point line. Carter only attempted 1.2 3-pointers a game, but his free throw percentage of 73.8 percent and his clean shooting mechanics are positive indicators for him to develop into a serviceable shooter from the outside.

Being on a stacked Duke team, the chances for Carter to assert himself consistently were hard to come by, but that shouldn’t deter teams from drafting him in the top 10. He has great timing on defense, can switch onto smaller players and holds his own when isolated on the perimeter.

With Gordon and Isaac as the team’s focal points, having a calm presence who does the little things well like Carter makes him the best big man prospect to pair with their young pillars if they miss out on the guards at the top of draft. Carter-Gordon-Isaac in the frontcourt offers athleticism, shooting, defensive versatility and mismatches at will. If they take a big, look for Orlando to grab one of the litany of seasoned guards later in the draft to fill the backcourt void.
