2. Jaren Jackson Jr.

Jaren Jackson Jr. may be living up to his namesake as one of the youngest prospects in this year’s draft at 18 years of age, but he is arguably one of the safest bets in the entire class.

Jackson was seventh in the nation in blocks per game (3.0), and fifth in total blocks (105). While high block totals in college are not an indicator that a player is going to be a defensive presence at the next level, plays like these are a good foundation:

Note that in the first two plays of this highlight reel, Jackson blocks guards that he was switched onto; and one play included him staying with a guard as he attempted to drive in the lane. On the third play, he showcased his ability to be a lob-threat, and then the fourth play was another showcasing of his defensive versatility.

With a 9’1″ standing reach and a 7’4″ wingspan, Jackson certainly has the physical tools to succeed at the next level. Between the first four teams that are picking in next month’s draft, Memphis is arguably the best landing spot.

If the Grizzlies keep Gasol into next season, he would be a great mentor to Jackson. While Gasol’s defensive skills have fallen off in recent years, he still has some tricks up his, uh, armpits? If Gasol does get traded, however, Jackson would quite literally become the centerpiece of the Grizzlies, and that’s a good thing.
