Detroit Pistons: 5 candidates to replace Stan Van Gundy as head coach
3. Monty Williams
Monty Williams is currently serving as the vice president of basketball operations with the San Antonio Spurs, but coaching isn’t out of the equation for him.
He has head coaching experience with the New Orleans Pelicans, where he led them to a record of 173-221 in five seasons. The Pelicans made two playoff appearances during his tenure as head coach and some critics argue Williams was fired prematurely back in 2014-15 after suffering a first round exit at the hands of the Golden State Warriors in the postseason. New Orleans was 45-37 in that season.
As of May 4, Williams has already interviewed for the Milwaukee Bucks’ head coaching vacancy as well. Considering his involvement there, it’s not completely out of the question to see Monty Williams make a return to the sidelines. He showed promise in his final season with Anthony Davis leading the way. He just didn’t have much to work with at the time.
Jrue Holiday was injured in Williams’ final season (2014-15) and Eric Gordon wasn’t the caliber of player he is now. With a healthy frontcourt of Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond, the possibilities are endless.
