5. Seth Curry, SG — Dallas Mavericks (unrestricted)

There’s a very good chance Isaiah Thomas will not be re-signed this offseason. Assuming that’s the case, the Lakers will need to find some competent guard depth that isn’t going to cost an arm and a leg. I mean, they need to save that cap space for their superstar pursuit.

On the surface, Seth Curry doesn’t seem to make sense for this list. However, when you consider the circumstances, I truly believe he could be had at a significant discount come July.

Why? Well there are two reasons in particular. The first is that Curry’s value is based largely on hypothetical production — he only has one quality season under his belt. There isn’t a lot of evidence to support signing him to a lucrative deal. The second is that he’s coming off a season lost entirely to a fractured leg.

Five seasons in the NBA, 118 games played and only 51 starts. That’s not the resume of a big-money free agent. Instead, it’s the resume of a player seeking a cheap, one-year deal in the hopes of proving his worth. That could be exactly what the Lakers are looking for, especially if they end up strapped for cash.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Curry decided to stick it out with the Mavericks. Regardless, the Lakers would be wise to see if he’d mind taking a trip to Los Angeles to play for a ring.
