Phoenix Suns: 5 biggest disappointments from 2017-18 NBA season
4. The first week of the season
Did any NBA team have a worse opening week than the Phoenix Suns in 2017-18? Even the Chicago Bulls managed to fall short of that honor, since the whole Bobby Portis-goes-Thanos-on-Nikola Mirotic thing happened before the season even started.
The Suns, on the other hand, managed to tell the entire story of their upcoming season through the first three games. Expectations were already low for a young, rebuilding team, but when Phoenix came out in the season opener and got massacred by 48 points against the Portland Trail Blazers — at home, no less — it was clear very little had changed over the summer.
Following a two-point home loss to the lowly Los Angeles Lakers, the Suns no-showed another game, suffering a 42-point road loss against the Los Angeles Clippers. By the time head coach Earl Watson was relieved of his duties — three games into the season — it felt like it had come two and a half games too late.
But wait! The dysfunction was just getting started, because it was at that point that starting point guard Eric Bledsoe kickstarted the most troll-worthy season of his already disappointing NBA career with the infamous “I Dont wanna be here” tweet.
His excuse? He was at the hair salon with his girlfriend when he sent that.
Even claiming he didn’t know who Terry Rozier was after Rozier crossed him into The Upside Down in the playoffs didn’t compare to the lameness at work here.
The Suns sent their starting point guard home until he could be traded, handed the reins over to an almost reluctant Jay Triano and after a few weeks of inspired play, were once again reduced to Western Conference fodder by injuries, inexperience and inevitability.
The Suns dealt Bledsoe for what they could, and will be glad Watson is gone no matter who they wind up hiring as the next head coach, but the first week of the season pretty much told the story of their entire 2017-18 campaign.
