Charlotte Hornets: 5 biggest disappointments from 2017-18 NBA season
2. The Hornets’ team defense was an eyesore
When discussing the biggest weakness of this squad, team defense is once again the biggest priority. The addition of Dwight Howard to the frontcourt didn’t change much, at least defensively. Howard averaged 16.6 points, 12.5 rebounds 1.6 blocks and 1.3 assists per game. As it’s become a guard’s league, the team needed more than just Howard in the paint.
Opponents shot 46.8 percent (22nd in the NBA) from the floor and 37.5 percent (27th in the NBA) from behind the arc. In 2016-17, opponents shot 45.6 percent (15th in the NBA) and 36.9 percent (25th in the NBA).
The Hornets took a massive step back on defense in 2017-18.They allowed 108.0 points per game as a team this past season. During the 2016-17, opponents scored 104.7 points per game. It’s hard to believe the team turned in a worse performance than a season ago, but it’s true.
The team will need to make some moves in free agency this offseason or it could find itself without All-Star Kemba Walker, who is up for free agency in 2019.
