Charlotte Hornets: 5 biggest disappointments from 2017-18 NBA season
4. The down then up performance of Malik Monk
The rookies on the Hornets roster didn’t do so hot in 2017-18. Malik Monk was sent to the G League as punishment at one point during the regular season. He got off to a slow start, but by the end of the season, things had changed.
Monk was sent down to the Greensboro Swarm of the G League for one game back on Dec. 26 where he put up 25 points, eight rebounds and four assists. His 25-point performance was all good and well, but he did it on 33 shot attempts. He went 7-of-21 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range in the game.
On the NBA side, he averaged 6.7 points, 1.4 assists and 1.0 rebounds through 63 games. He got off to a slow start after missing NBA Summer League with an ankle injury. Starting the regular season with an injury made for mixed results. Monk did finish the season shooting 34.2 percent from 3-point range, but it could have been a better year for him.
He did finish the season on a high note, averaging 20.4 points and 4.0 assists per game in the Hornets’ last five games. Although Charlotte went 2-3, it was a good sign for Monk. Carryover should help him as he enters Year 2 in the league.
