Charlotte Hornets: 2017-18 player grades for Kemba Walker
Charlotte Hornets point guard Kemba Walker once again produced another All-Star season, but how good was he overall?
Over the last two seasons, Charlotte Hornets point guard Kemba Walker has blossomed into one of the best point guards in the NBA. The former UConn standout has steadily increased his efficiency year by year, going from an erratic chucker to a reliable No. 1 option.
Walker’s dependability was affirmed this season when he became the leading scorer in franchise history, passing sharpshooter Dell Curry. However, Walker isn’t satisfied. Here’s what he told the Charlotte Observer on March 27:
"“I’ve always felt like I’m a winning player. Like I deserved it to be in the playoffs – to be battling,” Walker said. “That’s what it will be all about in the future.”"
Nobody should question Walker’s status as the best player on the team. The numbers speak for themselves: 22.1 points and 5.6 assists per game with a .431/.384/.864 shooting line. He led the team in Player Efficiency Rating (PER), win shares, and Value Over Replacement Player (VORP).
He was also selected to his second consecutive All-Star team (albeit as an injury replacement). The Hornets were much worse without him (-7.3 net rating) than with him (+3.9). But how impressive was Walker’s 2017-18 season truly? What did he do well? Where did he struggle? Well, that’s what we’re here to find out.
