Final grade

Schroder is a decent point guard. He could possibly become even better in the right situation. This isn’t one of these situations.

Atlanta is going to be terrible until it find the next franchise star. Schroder isn’t that person. He is a quick, skilled guard that struggles to shoot and defend. His passing is good, but unless you’re Rajon Rondo, it’s going to be tough to find good passing lanes when defenders don’t bother contesting your jumper.

If this season proved anything, it’s that a Dennis Schroder-led basketball team isn’t one with playoff aspirations. This isn’t a knock on Schroder, who had a nice year, but he showed that his shortcomings as a player are too much to keep a team afloat on a night-to-night basis.

Schroder would thrive as a sixth man in this league. He wouldn’t have to worry about facing the best guard on the opposing team as often and he could take advantage of lesser players and create scoring chances for himself and others. Plus coaches could hide him on defense (well, as much as possible in today’s game).

I could be wrong though. At 24, Schroder still has plenty of time to improve his game and become one of the better guards in the association. On this Atlanta team, he’ll have plenty of time to figure it out.
