After the Atlanta Hawks front office purged the roster, Dennis Schroder was the de-facto best player on the team this year. How did he handle being the top option?

Once the Atlanta Hawks commenced with their teardown effort, point guard Dennis Schroder was one of the only mainstays from the prior season. Heading into the 2017-18 campaign, Schroder was thrust into a role he was previously unfamiliar with: No. 1 scoring option.

Head coach Mike Budenholzer more or less gave the keys to Schroder this year (I mean, who else was he going to give them to?) and the German-born point man produced some ostensibly good results. But how beneficial were those numbers to the team’s performance?

It’s hard to gauge how well Schroder would have done on a team that was legitimately trying to win games. Some could make the argument that the 24-year-old is better suited as a backup on a good team. He can certainly fill up a stat sheet and he could feast on less talented reserve guards. I even think that Schroder could be a good third option as a starter (he wouldn’t have to handle the ball as much).

But how effective was Schroder as “the guy” for the Hawks? Well, let’s look at his performance this season and find out.
